How to Install Home Intercom Systems?
The primary purpose of a home intercommunication system is to call and talk to the family members present in different house corners. It can also be used to summon all the house members for a meal or any discussion.
When it is a big house with many floors and bedrooms, the home intercom system helps ease communication among the family members. But there are many other uses of a home intercom system. It provides you with a paging system packaged with a radio to play music, which can be heard in the entire house. It can also enhance home security with audio and video at the front door to recognize and talk to a visitor before letting them in. This helps when you are alone at home, or you want privacy.
One only requires minimum carpentry skills and knowledge on wiring to install a home intercom system. In this era of wireless technology, these intercom systems come wireless and with battery-powered modules. This is useful when you don’t want wires hanging on the walls of your house.
The master station is the central node of an intercom system. This node consists of all the electronic circuitry dealing with all the communications- the radio, the screen, and the telephone.
The intercom nodes using which one can only listen and reply are called slaves, remote or substations. The intercom in the rooms on the upper floors is only for answering and responding when called from the main telephone in the hall. The remote contains a speaker/microphone to listen/talk, respectively.
Usually, the master station is installed at a center and easily accessible location like the house’s hall. The substations can be installed in the rooms or even outside a room. The outdoor slave is generally installed at the front door, which includes the doorbell as well.
The central station has all the control over the substations and the tasks. Only the central station can call the desired substation or even all the substations at once. The addressed sub-station only can answer the call. A link is established between the central station and the addressed sub-station, once the answer button is pressed.
In some of the latest systems, there are more features like monitoring a substation. In this system, a substation can initiate a call to other substations or the master substation. There is also a privacy feature for any substation to prevent it from being monitored.
The wired intercom system comes with all the parts built-in and can be easily installed on a wall by punching holes at the right places in the wall space. The master station, being thin, can be conveniently installed at the center. The wiring can be hidden by fixing it, sticking to the wall, and covering it using square pipes, which gives it a neat look.
Let us understand the installation process better by looking into an example of an intercom system for a small house with a master station and four slave stations. The same procedure can be used for a more extensive network as well.

Tips for Installing a Home Intercom
The steps described below are typical for installing any home intercom systems and installing a home intercom system even with a different layout.
Step 1: It is advisable to start with installing the master station first.
Study the size master station and decide the place where you want to install it. Decide the size of the openings to be cut on the walls accordingly. The screws and other things required to mount the station on the wall are included in the package. Once the measurements needed for the size of the hole to mount the station are done, locate the studs. Make sure that the spot is between the studs.
Mark the hole outline to install the station hole on the wall at a convenient height (4-5 feet) to be accessible to all the members who would be using it.
At all the corners of the marked outline drill holes of ⅜ inches. Use an appropriate tool like a saw to make the hole bigger to place the central station. Check again if the measurements like correct by placing the box on it and make necessary amendments. Keep the box and continue with the installation.
Step 2: Repeat the above step for all the substations but drilling holes at the selected locations. As described, recheck the measurements and continue with the installation.
Step 3: Follow the circuit layout. Usually, in a home intercom system, only the central station is connected to the house’s electrical system; the substations are linked to the central station in a star topology.
Purchase an intercom cable along with a jacket for shock protection or to prevent any possible short-circuits.
Step 4: All the substations need to be connected back to the central station. These wires can be connected down from inside the wall through the basement or through the attic to make it less messy. Pass the cables through or alongside holders to the other side through the hole to connect to the central station.
The hole in the place below the substation must be large enough for wires from all substations to pass through it. Bring all the wires through this hole, label it to identify form which substation its coming, and number them using tape.
Step 5: For each of the substations, identify the three wires using color code given to you. It is usually black for neutral, red for live wire, and green for ground. Fix the substations on the wall using the screws and clamps. Attach the cover to hide the cracks, if any, and the extra part of the wires visible.
Caution: Since the central station is in direct connection to the electrical circuit of the house, make sure that the supply is off while working on the electrical connections to prevent shock. Use plastic gloves for safety. Use a transformer for the central station, which is connected to the electrical system.
Step 7: Connect all the substations using lines similarly by following the labels of the substations made earlier. Wall mount the central station with screws and clamps. Use the holder to fix the wires and hide them. Switch on the supply.
Step 8: Test the performance of the installed intercom system. In case of any failure, cut off the supply immediately. Check for any loose connections to and from all the substations. There might be any problem in the links or in any of the units.
Make the necessary amends. In case a wireless battery-powered system is used, replace the batteries at regular intervals according to their date, which differs from battery to battery.
The home intercom system is useful equipment to have in your house. It ensures the house’s security, is an easy way to summon all the house members and can play music throughout the house. Make a choice and install one right away!
