Tips for Installing a Home Intercom

The steps described below are typical for installing any home intercom and home intercom systems, even with a different layout.

Step 1: It is advisable to start installing the master station first.

Study the size master station and decide the place where you want to install it. Decide the size of the openings to be cut on the walls accordingly. The screws and other things required to mount the station on the wall are included in the package. Once the measurements needed for the hole size to mount the station are done, locate the studs. Make sure that the spot is between the studs.

Mark the hole outline to install the station hole on the wall at a convenient height (4-5 feet) to be accessible to all the members using it.

At all the corners of the marked outline, drill holes of ⅜ inches. Use an appropriate tool like a saw to make the hole bigger to place the central station. Check again if the measurements are correct by placing the box on it and making necessary amendments. Keep the box and continue with the installation.

Step 2: Repeat the above step for all the substations but drill holes at the selected locations. As described, could you recheck the measurements and continue with the installation?

Step 3: Follow the circuit layout. Usually, in a home intercom system, only the central station is connected to the house’s electrical system; the substations are linked to the central station in a star topology.

You can purchase an intercom cable and a jacket to protect against shock or prevent possible short circuits.

Step 4: All the substations must be connected to the central station. These wires can be connected down from inside the wall through the basement or attic to make it less messy. Could you pass the cables through or alongside holders to the other side through the hole to connect to the central station?

The hole below the substation must be large enough for wires from all substations to pass through it. Could you bring all the wires through this hole, label them to identify which substation it’s coming from, and number them using tape?

Step 5: For each substation, identify the three wires using the color code given to you. It is usually black for neutral, red for live wire, and green for ground. Fix the substations on the wall using the screws and clamps. Attach the cover to hide the cracks, if any, and make the extra part of the wires visible.

Caution: Since the central station is in direct connection to the electrical circuit of the house, make sure that the supply is off while working on the electrical connections to prevent shock. Use plastic gloves for safety. Use a transformer for the central station connected to the electrical system.

Step 7: Connect all the substations using lines similarly by following the labels of the substations made earlier. Wall mount the central station with screws and clamps. Use the holder to fix the wires and hide them. Switch on the supply.

Step 8: Test the performance of the installed intercom system. In case of any failure, cut off the supply immediately. Check for any loose connections to and from all the substations. There might be any problem with the links or any of the units.

Make the necessary amends. If a battery-powered wireless system is used, replace the batteries at regular intervals according to their date, which differs from battery to battery.
